‘Floe’ Event!!

Hey guys!! Last weekend, me and my family visited the Deep so we could watch the city of Culture event that was happening there. The event was called ‘Floe’ and through virtual projections, it revealed the architecture and inspiration behind one of Hull’s most infamous buildings. Using a mixture of film, modelling, mapping and projection, UK artists Heinrich and Palmer have succeeded in creating a spectacular piece of work that centers around the unique qualities of Hull’s very own aquarium which truly shows the building’s beauty. So in today’s post, I’m going to describe further about this event and give you my honest opinion of it.

‘Floe’ was spectacular to watch from start to finish. The music that accompanied the video was calming and created an atmospheric feeling like you were experiencing ‘Floe’ whilst in the sea. There were also various sound effects throughout the video to suit what was happening at that point and the music was created as a soundscape to drive forth the imagery that the event causes. It was truly magical to learn about the architecture of the Deep through this event while it was projected onto the aquarium itself. The video started off showing great sheets of ice that appeared to be in a coastal area and over the course of the video, it illustrated the evolution from the ice age to the sea and its diverse range of sealife that it has now. ‘Floe’ also had a direct link to Hull’s proud fishing heritage through its artistic interpretation of Hull’s maritime history. The Deep is built on Sammy’s point, an area renowned for its shipbuilding past and previously where the 17th century citadel stood as part of Hull’s defences. It’s quite amazing how all these different themes in the event come together as one to create such a beautiful piece of art work and I really applaud Heinrich and Palmer for piecing this stunning video together.
