My first time rollerskating!

Hey guys! So as the title suggests, I recently had my first experience of rollerskating. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but the opportunity never arose before. A couple of weeks ago, a roller skating rink was installed into the Stage at the Dock just for the week and me and some of my friends decided that we’d try it out. In my head, I had compared it to ice skating since both required you to wear special footwear and both required you to use a certain technique to travel around the rink. However, I’d never quite got the hang of ice skating and I’d hoped it would be a different story with roller skating. I ended up having a really lovely time with my friends and I would actually love to do roller skating again! So in today’s post, I’m going to share my experience of roller skating with you all.

So initially, after first putting on my roller skates, it was a shaky start. Lots of other people were clinging to the edge like me because we’d all only just begun to skate on the rink. I think starting a new activity is really hard at first especially if you have no one to direct you. Luckily, there were some people from the company who brought the roller skating rink who were advising people on how they could improve their skating. I discovered that roller skating involved a similar technique to ice skating where you had to swap from foot to foot and sway from side to side. I gradually grew in confidence and began to depend on the support of the side less and less.

I think for me, my biggest fear is falling over whilst doing roller/ice skating and injuring myself which is why I had an air of cautiousness to start off with. But once I’d started to pick up the technique for roller skating, it felt more natural and fun to do. I really enjoyed the feeling of gliding around the rink and as time went on, I relaxed into it more and more. I wasn’t going super fast but just at a steady pace. I was pretty sad when our hour on the roller skating rink ended because I’d had so much fun. It’s rare that I fall in love with a sport so quickly as it usually takes time for me to warm up to it but roller skating was the exception to the rule.

I would definitely recommend roller skating if you haven’t tried it before. I would say that it’s quite easy to pick up the technique and it’s so great to glide around the rink as you gain more confidence. I hope that one day Hull may acquire a permanent roller skating rink.

Thank you for reading this post! Have you ever tried roller skating before? Let me know in the comments! There’ll be another post out soon but until then bye for now!

  1. Hi Amelia!
It sounds like you had a lot of fun rollerskating! I think it is so good for our brains and overall well-being to try new things like this. Around Christmas, I tried ice skating for the first time and I was so apprehensive at first. I had gone rollerskating as a little child, but never ice skating and when I stepped onto the ice I feared that I would not even make it around the rink once. Thankfully I had a friend who helped me get my balance and gave me some pointers.
I really enjoyed reading this post!

  2. Oooo this is so cool! I’ve never done rollerskating, or rollerblading, but I’ve always wanted to try. The skates are more appealing to me, inline ones seem less steady. Glad you had a great time & that you’d do it again! This has been on my bucket list for ages, I really do need to give it a go.xx

  3. Ooh it looks like you had a lot of fun! ❤ I have roller skated at different times, as well as gone rollerblading, and I definitely prefer rollerblading because my hips and knees are rather sensitive to pivoting. I very much prefer to wear wrist guards when doing either activity because I'm not that short (haha), and falling is a long ways down! xD

  4. I always used to go rollerblading as a kid around our local park but have not done this in ages (mostly because my rollerblades do not fit anymore and adult ones are expensive). I always found it easier than ice skating as the ground is rougher so it is easier to get traction and not fall over, although I have never done it in a rink before so cannot comment with regards to that. xx
