The New Hull Minster and International Hanse Day!!!

Hey guys!! So on Saturday, me and my family took a little trip into Hull to see the event that was going on in honour of Holy Trinity Church becoming Hull Minster. We also had a look round the activities going on for international Hanse Day. Hanse Day commemorates the Hanseatic League formed by seafaring merchants from across northern Europe in the 13th Century which was a way of pursuing their economic interests. There were up to 200 towns and cities that were all members of the League and Hull was one of the several associated trading cities, exporting goods such as wool, cloth and salt. In 2012, Hull joined the new HANSE , which is a partnership of many of the original towns and cities that were part of the medieval Hanseatic League. The new HANSE league is encouraging the cities and towns that are part of it to keep alive the spirit of the League and to keep a lively exchange between its members. In today’s blog post, I’m going to be sharing my day out in Hull with you all!!

The square outside Holy Trinity Church was full of people and full of activity. On the main stage, there were lots of performances from bands, choirs, opera singers and many more. Archbishop Sentamu of York and the Bishop of Hull were also at the event and they delivered an hour long service from 3 until 4. At 4 o clock, the bells from the newly named Hull Minster rang out in celebration of it becoming a Minster. It was a very proud and historic day for Hull and I’m really glad I got to experience it.

At the same time, from 10 until 4, the event for Hanse Day was running in Hull in the old town near Scale Lane Bridge. There were a range of activities going on which included re -enactors who lined the streets with interesting characters and a great story line, lots of different stalls selling things that would’ve been sold in the medieval times, dance performances, crafts and even a little mini farm. It really felt like we’d gone back to the medieval times and I found the whole event a lot of fun!! If you missed the Hanse Day activities, I would definitely recommend trying to catch it when it comes back next year!!
