‘Height of the Reeds’ on the Humber Bridge!!

Hey guys!! So on Monday 17th April, me and my family went to the Humber Bridge so we could experience the ‘Height of the Reeds’ event which was on there. We put headphones on and walked 2.5k over the Humber Bridge listening to music that had been specially composed by Arve Henriksen, Jan Bang and Eivind Aarset for the event. However, on the way back you could listen to music that was made by the bridge itself!! The ‘Height of the Reeds’ music featured the amazing music of both the chorus and Orchestra of Opera North and the field recordings were taken by Jez Riley French. ‘Height of the Reeds’ is possibly one of my favourite City of Culture events so far and I’m really glad I got the opportunity to do this event. In today’s blog post, I’m going to be describing ‘Height of the Reeds’ and giving you my honest opinion on it.

As we started to walk across the Humber Bridge, I lost myself in the beautiful music that had been composed for the event. The music was really soothing and calm and it really helped to connect you to the stunning views and nature that was all around you. Every so often, when you reached a certain point on the bridge, some lines of poetry would be read to you by Maureen Lipman, Barrie Rutter or Katie Smith, a local school girl. These poems were by Norwegian poet, Nils Christian Moe-Repstad and they fitted in perfectly with the peaceful, calming music. On the way back, I listened to the recordings of the bridge for a bit and it was a really interesting and unique sound!! You could hear the wind blowing on the bridge and you could also hear the sound of cars clacking as they traveled across the bridge!! If you’ve not yet been to ‘Height of the Reeds’ and you can manage to get tickets for it (all the tickets are currently sold out and it will cost about £2.50 if you go in May), then I would definitely recommend going to it as it is such a good event and one which you will never forget.

I would rate this event 10 out of 10 stars and if I could I would rate it more!! It is my favourite City of Culture event so far; I loved the calm, soothing effect the music had on me and I wish I could listen to music like that every single day!!
